No, we do not allow IRC (Internet Relay Chat) access via our network. This includes customers of shared hosting, virtual or dedicated servers. The reasoning behind this is to mitigate attacks against our servers and networks and in turn prevent downtime or other service related issues. IRC has been around on the internet since 1988, and is a form of real-time Internet chat or synchronous conferencing. It is mainly designed for group communication in discussion forums called channels, but also allows one-to-one communication via private message, as well as chat and data transfers via Direct Client-to-Client.
Lately, it has been used (or abused) by botnets and other nefarious activities and has caused us to restrict the use of our networks for any IRC access to prevent such abuse and time/resources to monitor and administrate such activities.
